Description Mazda 6 (GJ/GL, 2016-2018)

The current third-generation Mazda 6 debuted in 2012, and we got it in February 2013. Since then, the "six" has collected 41 prestigious titles, including "Car of the Year 2014 in Ukraine 2014", albeit not absolute, but in the middle class. Given that the company does not have anything larger than the Mazda 6, it has to take the rap for the main one.

Of course, the Mazda 6 does not pull on the flagship - this is a strong middle class that will have to fight with such strong players as Volkswagen Passat, Honda Accord And Toyota Camry.

A sense of quality creates attention to detail. For example, double stitching for high trim levels with a leather interior, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and a gear lever boot. Finishing the control panel "music" and "climate" is now glossy, in the style of piano-black. This is if you pay attention to the little things. More noticeable changes in the cabin are the 7-inch screen of the multimedia system that migrated from the “troika”, which also rises above the “beard” and is controlled by a proprietary washer at the parking brake button.

The engines, by the way, have not changed - this is a pair of gasoline naturally aspirated engines of the Skyactive family with a volume of 2.0 (165 hp and 210 Nm) and 2.5 (192 hp and 256 Nm). A turbodiesel also appeared, but about it a little lower and more. Only the junior motor is aggregated with a six-speed "mechanics", but, unfortunately, this version was not in our visiting cortege. The six-speed "automatic" is also familiar from pre-styling versions and pleases with smooth operation. If you are not in a hurry, then the two-liter version is quite enough, but the 2.5 engine gives a feeling of confidence when overtaking on country roads. And at the same time it turns out to be quite economical: I averaged no more than 10 l / 100 km. The Skyactive technology, which features a high compression ratio (14.0:1), may still be a concern in terms of durability, but it really works, perfectly combining high power with fuel efficiency.

The Skyactiv-D 2.2 turbodiesel develops 175 hp. at 4500 rpm and 450 Nm at 2000 rpm, it is 20% more fuel efficient than its predecessor, the MZR-CD, which has a 185 hp version. It has become 10% lighter, and the compression ratio has been reduced from 16.3:1 to 14:1. In order for a diesel engine with such a low compression ratio to start up steadily in the cold, an analogue of the Honda VTEC system is installed on the exhaust camshaft with special “warm-up” cams for each pair of exhaust valves. During the intake stroke, the exhaust valves open momentarily, returning some warm air or hot exhaust gases from the exhaust manifold. After the engine warms up, the electronics switches the exhaust valves to conventional cams.

It cannot be called absolutely new - it is the same engine as in the CX-5 diesel crossover. True, if there he gives out 175 hp. and 420 Nm without options, then when buying a Mazda 6 sedan you have a choice. In addition to this option, there is a more affordable 150 hp unit. and 380 Nm. And if they produce peak power at identical 4500 rpm, then their torque is distributed differently. If in a 175-horsepower engine all 420 Nm are available around 2000 rpm, then the peak 380 Nm of the derated engine lies on the shelf from 1800 to 2600 rpm, offering the driver a more elastic character of the engine. 

Sound insulation has been improved by optimizing the sound-absorbing material of the instrument panel, the material in the roof lining, improved door seals, additional vibration-proofing material has been added to the boot floor lining, the protective and sound-absorbing properties of the thresholds have been increased, and the bottom seal has been added. In general, in terms of acoustic comfort, the Mazda 6 has really pulled itself up to the premium segment!

The updated Mazda 6 is distinguished not only by the visually more beautiful headlights with a new pattern at night, but also by their filling with adaptive LED headlights. Moreover, the LEDs are divided into four groups, the brightness of each of which is controlled individually, allowing you to avoid blinding oncoming drivers. And thanks to the three low-beam LEDs, the illumination area at close range is increased. Controls the vertical optical axis, depending on the speed of the car, a compact stepper motor located in the headlight housing.

In addition, a new system for monitoring the position of the car in relation to the road markings LKA (Lane Keep Assist) has appeared, which uses cameras to determine the position of the car and can correct it by changing the effort on the steering wheel in the right direction. Another thing is that with our markup, this innovative feature is often inefficient and definitely not worth relying on. But in the event of an unauthorized exit from the lane, it can wake up a tired driver at a critical moment with a buzzer or vibration on the steering wheel.

Already in the basic configuration there are all the necessary safety systems: ABS, six airbags, a stabilization system (DSC), a brake force distribution system (EBD), an emergency braking system (EBA), a traction control system (TCS), a pressure control system in Tire Management System (TPMS), Forward Roll Prevention System (HLA), and City Brake Safety System (SCBS).

The top version of the Premium Mazda 6 Diesel has an active cruise control that maintains a predetermined distance to the front car. Also in the range of top-of-the-range equipment, ALH (LED Adaptive Light), SBS (Highway Braking Safety), LDWS (Lane Departure Warning), LKA (Lane Alert), RCTA (Rear Cross Traffic Alert) , BSM (blind spot monitoring system).
